                               GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD

 

Thinking about the experience

 

1-       Literarure is to be able to read written in it. Target culture is limited to its literature and fine arts.

2-       Translation is an important goal for students.

3-       The ağabeylity to communicate in target language isn’t a goal of foreigne language instruction.

4-       Primary skills are reading and writing. Pronouncation neredeyse hiç yok. Nadiren de speaking ve listening.

5-       Authority in the class is teacher. Students must get correct answers.

6-       Finding the native equvalents for all target language words is possible.

7-       Dil iki dil arasındaki benzerliklere dikkat çekerek öğretilir.

8-       Learning the forms of L2 is important.

9-       Deductive application of an exclipt grammar rule is a useful pedogogical technique.

10-   Language learning provides good mental learning

11-   Students must be conscious of the grammar rules of the L2.

12-   Grammatical paradigms should be memorised.

 

Reviewing The Principals

 

1-       Goals of the teacher in GTM

Teachers should teach reading literature written in L2, grammar rules  and vocabulary to develop students minds by mental exerccises.

2-       Teachers’ and students roles:

Teacher is authority in the class.

3-       Caracteristics of teaching/learning proccess.

  • translation from one language into another (often written texts about some aspects of the culture of L2 community).
  • Students study grammar deductively. (Önce grammar verilir, öğrenciler ezberler ve sonra da soru sorulur.)
  • Kelimeler iki dilde ezberlenir.

4-       The nature of teacher to students/sutents to students interaction:

  • from teacher to students.
  • little initiation of students

6-       How is the language viwed? / How is the culture viwed?

  • Literary language is superior to spoken language.
  • Culture is considered as literature and fine arts.

7-        

  • Vocabulary and grammar are emphasised. Reading and writing are primary skills.
  • The language used in the class is mostly native language (L1).

8-       The role of students’ L1:

  • Meaning of the target language is made by translation. Mostly L1 is used in the lessons.

9-       Written test sor vice versa are often used (commanly grammar rules).

10-   How does the teacher response to students error?

     - Having corrected answer is vey important.
